We Call Them Flowers

Day Ninety-one:  We love our weeds. Really.

From april 2010

Ariel loves to pick "flowers" in our front yard. Seriously. She loves it.

If she walks by the front door when it is open, she almost always goes to the door and looks out. Then she turns to me and points outside. I ask if she wants to go out and she says "yea" or nods. Then we do and all she does is pick "flowers"

What does this mean? Well, she picks heads off of all the flowering weeds in our yard. She brings them to me one by one to pile up on the steps. Sometimes she just brings me petals. These are usually not weeds though. They are from our camelia "tree."

On Easter, this became a slight problem. She picked the flowers in my mom's flower garden. They weren't weeds. They were pansies. Oops. We'll have to work on that...however, we don't have any real flowers at our house, so we'll have to go other places.

Today I tried to teach her about the stem and how it is better to pick flowers by the stem rather than just plucking the flower top off. She's not a fan. I showed her how. Then encouraged her to hold them by the stem too. She didn't like this either. We'll keep working on it. Later, I picked a "bouquet" of "flowers" out of our yard to show her why the stem is good. I put them in a pretty little cup with water and set them in the window of her bedroom. We'll see if this helps.

Yes, all of these "flowers" are in our yard. Our front yard.

Thank you, God, for so many different kinds of "flowers". They are troublesome to most people, but we like them. They are teaching Ariel about flowers. They make our yard pretty and colorful even though I won't buy flowers. They are providing hours of entertainment. Thank you again for one more aspect of this beautiful world.

What's this about? I decided on my birthday to make a commitment to being intentionally thankful. I challenged myself to post one thing I am thankful for everyday this year.

  1. love the picture. You have an extremely smart little girl. I like to think that is a direct reflection of how much time the childs parents put into their learning. Yall are doing such a good job. I think sometimes i underestimate how intelligent they can actually become at this age. Bryleigh is constantly surprising me with how smart she is! This morning i handed her a sippy cup and she said Tank Tu. I couldnt believe it!!

  2. Ashleigh, Ariel said something like thank you today too...it sounded more like "dank" after I gave her a kiss. I usually ask for kisses and say thank you when she does it.

They really are amazing, though. The way they learn is like nothing else I've ever experienced.

  3. my niece says Tank. lol. I couldnt believe she picked up thankyou. Everytime she hands me something, i say thankyou, good girl. because she usually has something shes not supposed to, and i try to be more positive than constantly saying no no. lol. So today when i handed it to her, she said tank tu. so proud, so proud. Our girls are brilliant :)

  4. We do the same thing. And she hands us EVERYTHING she finds on the floor...pieces of rice that she dropped from her plate, single strands of dog hair, pieces of paper, cell phones, pens, remote controls, etc. EVERYTHING. Sometimes she hands me nothing, but I'm sure it was something at some point...probably too small to see or keep in her hand. It's always a surprise. We say thank you for it all because she is doing right by giving it to us.
